MicroStation Magic — by Keith Little

Want a little Magic in your life?? I mean in your MicroStation life, of course! Here's something that will do the trick. ( – About the Author – )

We've taken one of our Classics — MicroStation Magic, and converted it into our first, full-length eBook (212 pages.)

The Magic book, as it is fondly known, has taught folks how MicroStation does business — but has done so using a particularly shall-we-say interesting approach.

Perhaps a quick look at the topics covered will help...

  • Magic on the Command Line — Tips and Shortcuts
  • Getting Parsed — the Input Loop
  • Tips and Tricks
  • Stoopid Tricks
  • Dirty Tricks
  • Really Dirty Tricks
  • Bentley Fokelore and Myth
  • and much more...

As you can see, we started out with some pretty much straight-forward topics, and then pretty quickly degenerated into Stoopid Tricks, Slight-of-Hand, and some downright Really Nasty stuff.

There's Method to the Madness, though.

The idea for this book came from an ad-hoc presentation by the Author at the New-England Intergraph Users Group, about a million years ago. The presentation (called, strangely enough, Stoopid MicroStation Tricks) was held in a small off-to-the-side Meeting Room meant to hold 35 or so people. Once the word got out we were having this Stoopid extravaganza, the room ended up packed — with nearly 100 Tricksters — crammed in like Sardines.

You could easily tell who was who — the Tricksters (aka. MicroStation Designers) scribbled madly, trying to capture each Trick, so they could use it on some un-suspecting co-worker when they got back to the Office. The other folks (the System Admins) were like, "Oh man!!! Don't show them that!!!"

I knew right then we were onto something. These folks were having fun, and learning something about MicroStation too!

While this book is one of our oldest, it none-the-less has much to offer the true Student of the Station. It is a testament to just how little has really changed when it comes to the down-and-dirty base internals we call the Graphics Engine. Spend some time getting Stoopid and see if you don't agree.
